Oral Cancer Exams with Your Trusted Dentist: Massapequa Screenings with Dr. Allan Mohr
April 15, 2015
If you are looking for a dentist Massapequa patients have trusted faithfully for decades, look no further than the office of Dr. Allan S. Mohr. Our dedicated team has been serving the complete oral healthcare needs of Long Island families for nearly 30 years, and our patients are our passion. Because it’s April and Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we’d like to take a few moments to provide our valued patients with some important information regarding this aggressive disease.
Oral Cancer Symptoms & Risk Factors
Every year, approximately 43,250 men and women in America are diagnosed with oral cancer. Of that staggeringly high number, only about half survive past five years. The key to successfully treating oral cancer is early diagnosis and prompt therapy before the disease has a chance to progress. This is why Dr. Mohr performs regular oral cancer screenings at his Massapequa dental office.
While a thorough oral cancer screening is the only definitive method of accurately diagnosing this life-threatening condition, there are some clear signs that you can watch for at home. These include:
- A sore or ulcer that does not go away within two weeks
- Unexplained numbness or tingling anywhere in the mouth, throat, or neck
- A thickening of the skin in the mouth, particularly in the cheek lining
- Red and/or white patches in the mouth or on the lips
- Persistent cough or hoarseness
- A difference in the way your dentures fit
- Difficulty or pain chewing, swallowing, or opening and closing the mouth
People who use tobacco, drink alcohol excessively, and have HPV (human papillomavirus) are considerably more likely to develop oral cancer. To learn more about risk factors and how you can reduce your chances of suffering from oral cancer, simply ask a member of our friendly staff for more information.

Dental Prophylaxis vs. Deep Cleaning: Understanding Periodontal Care with Dr. Mohr
December 15, 2014
The health of your teeth and gums directly affects your overall wellness, making routine oral hygiene visits at the dentist a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping your gums healthy may actually reduce your risk of developing certain medical conditions, including heart disease, dementia, stroke, and cancer. At Smile Creations in Massapequa Park, NY, Dr. Allan S. Mohr helps his patients maintain exceptional oral health with a variety of preventive and periodontal care solutions, including dental prophylaxis and deep cleaning.
Comprehensive Gum Care for a Healthy Smile
Dental prophylaxis – commonly called a “prophy” – is a treatment that involves polishing the teeth to control bacteria on the teeth and just beneath the gum line. A prophy is typically performed twice per year, or every six months, to maintain healthy gums and teeth. This type of visit doesn’t take long (typically not more than an hour), and it is often completely covered by your dental insurance. Even patients who don’t have dental benefits can receive this kind of preventive care for very little out of pocket.
A deep cleaning is performed when the level of bacteria and plaque beneath the gum line is higher than normal and causing irritation of the gums. Left untreated, this inflammation and infection can lead to the loss of bone tissue and teeth over time. Fortunately, a deep cleaning can essentially halt the progression of periodontal disease before it advances to this level. During this type of visit, Dr. Mohr effectively removes the cause of the infection itself, the bacteria that accumulate on the teeth beneath the gums. Additional therapies may be used to decrease sensitivity and to promote healing, including a diode soft tissue laser and antibiotic medications. Deep cleaning visits are typically scheduled more frequently – approximately every three months – in order to maintain periodontal health.

Use It, Don’t Lose It! Take Full Advantage of Your Dental Benefits with Dr. Mohr
November 10, 2014
The year is rapidly coming to a close and there’s never been a better time to make full use of your dental benefits. At the Massapequa Park, NY dental practice of Dr. Allan S. Mohr, we want each and every one of our patients to start the New Year off right with a healthy, gorgeous smile; one of the best ways to make this vision a reality involves using your dental benefits now before they expire.
The Importance of Using Your Dental Benefits Now
If you’re like most working adults in America, a portion of your monthly paycheck goes directly toward a dental benefits policy. Shouldn’t you be getting the most for your hard-earned money? As 2014 draws to an end, keep the following factors in mind when considering your dental insurance benefits and how to make the most of them.
- Your annual maximum: This is the maximum amount your plan will pay toward dental treatment for any given year. Because benefits generally do not roll over into the next calendar year, any unused portion of this amount will be forfeited when the plan resets on January 1st.
- Consider your deductible: Nearly every dental insurance plan is subject to what is known as a deductible. This is the out-of-pocket amount a patient must fulfill before his or her benefits actually take effect. If you have satisfied your deductible but have not been back to the dentist since, you are essentially losing out on the benefits to which you are entitled as a result of your benefits plan.
- Monthly premiums: While it may seem like an obvious observation, many men and women pay for their dental benefits all year long without ever once taking advantage of their dentist’s services. If you are paying into a dental plan, it’s time to put your policy to work for you before December 31st. This is the deadline for the majority of dental benefits plans, and you don’t want to miss out on the treatment you’ve already paid for over the course of the year.
Schedule Your Visit Today
No one likes to pay for a service they never actually get to use. Your dental benefits exist solely to help you prevent and treat oral health concerns, so make sure that you’re making the most of them before they expire. Contact our office in Massapequa Park, NY today to schedule your visit with Dr. Mohr, and discover how easy it can be to utilize your dental insurance benefits for the health and beauty of your smile. Our warm, welcoming office is privileged to serve patients from throughout Long Island, Lindenhurst, Wantagh, Seaford, and the surrounding areas.
