Whether you’re making a big decision like whether or not to take a job, or even a small one such as figuring out where to eat lunch, the key to finding the right answer is to simply ask questions. While you probably don’t need help with those two scenarios, how can you make sure you choose the right dentist for your smile makeover?
This can have a huge positive impact on your health and appearance, but it’s still a big commitment when it comes to time and investment. Thankfully, just by asking a dentist these four questions, finding the perfect fit should be easy.
Question 1: What cosmetic dentistry experience do you have?
Unlike orthodontics, pediatrics, endodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics, cosmetic dentistry is not an officially recognized specialty by the American Dental Association. That means virtually any dentist can tout themselves as a cosmetic dentist whether or not they have any experience or dedicated training.
When you ask this question, a true cosmetic dentist will share the numerous courses they’ve taken and organizations they are a member of, such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the American Society for Dental Aesthetics.
Question 2: Can you show me some before/after photos?
Seeing is believing when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. Hopefully, the dentist you’re considering has examples of their work on their website, but when you meet them in person, they should hopefully have more cases to share. Ideally, they can reference patients they’ve treated who have similar teeth or goals as you, giving you a better idea of what they can accomplish for you specifically.
Question 3: What will my result look like?
Today’s dental technology allows dentists to take a picture of your current smile and create a digital mock-up of what you’d look like after getting veneers, teeth whitening, bonding, or other cosmetic services. This can not only help you set your expectations, but it also gives you a chance to design your new smile alongside your dentist so you are on the same page. If they lack this technology and just want you to “trust them,” it’s best to move on.
Question 4: What are my payment options?
A smile makeover can be quite expensive, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be out of reach. Cosmetic dentists are used to working with patients who can and can’t afford to pay for everything at once, so they should be able to offer financing. This breaks up the cost into smaller installments more in line with your budget. If the dentist only offers one way to pay (that doesn’t work for you) or pressures you to pay everything before the work begins, they aren’t the right dentist!
Of course, you aren’t limited to just four questions when consulting a dentist for a smile makeover—you can share anything and everything that comes to mind. They should be happy to provide the information you want and put your mind at ease so you can look forward to your new look starting on that day.
